Creating a historic map and city guide to subvert sedentary tourism in Bridgetown, a low key UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bridgetown & its Garrison was a pocket magazine and city guide designed to help visitors to Bridgetown explore the capital city, history and world heritage, and raise awareness of its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. Though Barbados is a well-known tourist destination with an annual tourist population that is higher than its local residents, many visitors didn't have access to authentic ways to explore the country's heritage and culture.
I was brought on by Cube Publishing to help the team create content the magazine's content strategy and editorial. My roles ranged from landing advertising sales and content development to recruiting writers and writing articles for the magazine. I organised content into three key points of exploration - people, places and pleasures - enabling readers to use the magazine to explore the city's Caribbean Georgian architecture, contemporary heritage sites and cultural history. The magazine also included articles by heritage experts and rare archival photography, allowing the first edition to function as both a cultural keepsake and practical pocketbook. The cover photo shows an image of a contentious relic of the country's past colonial government - the Changing of the Guard at the Garrison.
Partners and sponsors included the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. and the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. The magazine was acquired by local publisher Barbados Today for future editions.
